Looking for a truly off the beaten path experience?

Try taking your next vacation in North Korea.

The country has just re-opened its borders to tourists following a seasonal hiatus and the observance of a mourning period for late leader Kim Jong Il.

With the exception of journalists and South Koreans, everyone in the world is able to apply for a visa to visit North Korea. But don’t start planning a self-guided tour of the place. All visitors to the country must be accompanied by a registered tour operator at all times.

Companies like Beijing based Koryo group offer guided tours of North Korea throughout the year. Custom designed packages are also available. Trip highlights include Mount Paektu, visiting the northern side of the demilitarized zone and attending the Mass Games, a colourful festival that includes highly choreographed song and dance performances by tens of thousands of dancers among other attractions.
